PSP-3000 vs Nintendo DSi

This entry was posted on Nov 03 2008

Sony has released the long awaited PSP-3000, so now how does it compare to the latest from nintendo –

Super Mario DSiWare

Super Mario DSiWare

Nintendo DSi hand held? Sony PSP 3k has improved LCD screen and finally a built-in microphone that should have been there in the first place. LCD screen has the same resolution and  size as PSP Phat and PSP 2000 a.k.a Lite displays, but Sony claims that it has new anti-reflection technology  Рnot really a problem before, and a wider color gamut Рthat is good + 5X times higher contrast Рnow this is more like it. We are getting close to being able to see PSP screen in the sun :)

So PSP3000 (no mod chips for it have been released as of yet)

  • Better screen that is closer in brightness to what DS Lite has – YES
  • PSP 3000 hacked and ready to play pirated backup games – NO
  • Works with PSP3000 Custom Firmware M33 5.00 etc. – NO
  • Can PSP3k play PSP iso and cso files from Memory Stick – NO

vs Nintendo DSi

  • Even bigger and brigter screen – YES
  • Hacked / Moded to play NDS roms – NO
  • Works with GBA Flash Cards – NO – No longer has GBA slot!
  • Can play MP3 from SD card – NO only AAC supported !?#$@

so at this point I would say – stay with your OLD PSP and DS Lite and wait for the new console versions to hacked and modded or modchips released for them so that all the good features are unlocked. Untill than 3000 and DSi are good for the casual gamer who knows nothing about the roms and emulators, but not for the pirate in You!

  1. AAC is better than MP3 anyway.

It would be like bitching about a phone not supporting MMS when it can do email.

  2. That screenshot is not a Super Mario DSiWare. It’s the music player, I’ve got one.

  3. I still prefer PSP though DSi comes with a large screen less weight and an attractive integrated camera.

  4. AAC sucks, the only place it even makes a difference is at 128kbs and I don’t even own a single file encoded that lowly anyway. MP3s are also massively more common and I definitely don’t transcode one lossy format to another, like would be required MP3 to AAC obviously. Either way, I don’t own a DS so it doesn’t really concern me, just letting some facts out. iTunes sucks all around regardless, as do Apple’s formats in general.

  5. Enjoy trying to encode a 5.1 channel MP3 in your inferior format. It won’t work no matter what bandwidth you try.

  6. The all new slimmer PSP 3000 comes in with a couple of new upgrades over the 2000 model. Primarily for the Skype functionality, a microphone is onboard along with a reduced glare 4.3″ screen. Its a given that fingerprints will still be a continued issue for the PSP line. Thankfully, the age old problem of ghosting has yet to appear on my new PSP 3000.
